WHO USES WHAT KINDS OF TESTS?
Most schools outsource the preparation of scholarship tests to either Edutest or ACER. See their websites for details of the tests and the schools which use them. In many cases, students sit one test on the earliest available date, and the results are provided to multiple schools. For example, schools using ACER's co-operative testing program will all have their test on Saturday 29 Feb 2020. This is a "sit-once for many schools" test. Other schools choose to have their own customised test, or may use the Edutest product. Westbourne Grammar for example, uses Edutest. Other schools using Edutest can be found here. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CHECK WITH THE SCHOOL YOU ARE INTERESTED IN, FOR THE EXACT PROCEDURE, DATE AND REGISTRATION. BE AWARE OF REGISTRATION DEADLINES!
CAN MY CHILD TRY?
Tests are sat in the year before the entry year, e.g. if you are hoping to enter in Year 7, you would sit the test in February/March of Year 6. Note that this is different to the State Selective Entrance Exam, held in June each year, for Year 9 entry into one of the exclusive State Selective Schools (Suzanne Cory, Ma cRobertson, Melbourne High, Nossal).
HOW WILL KING'S PEAK PREPARE MY CHILD?
We recommend attendance at our regular English & STEM classes, as early in the child's school career as possible. During January and February of each year, we offer an intensive preparation program. For 2020, this program will be structured as follows:
2 face-to-face sessions per week from 7 January
Timed Acer/Edutest-style practice tests each week
Timed practice essays each week, with detailed feedback; students are expected to rewrite selected essays to correct mistakes
Vocabulary and reading exercises for homework
Targeted help with specific areas of weakness, through a combination of individual feedback, explanatory videos or practice exercises*
*Note: given the intensive nature of this program, it may not be possible to cover all areas of weakness, which is why we encourage participation in our regular tutoring program as well.
STRUCTURE & COST
$240 for the core program as described above, running 7 Jan to 31 Jan (4 weeks)
Since students will have different dates for their first/last test(s) during February and March, this second period will be charged separately at at $45/lesson. Each lesson during Feb/March includes: 30 minutes 1-on-1 direct tuition, one test or essay with feedback and targeted self-learning activities. Typically, students will take two lessons per week until their final exam date. See below for a SAMPLE PROGRAM or CLICK HERE:
